Thermarest sleeping pads are a must! I have had my Thermarest pad for over 10 years... packing it all over western Europe via motorcycle. It's light weight and durable and worth the extra cost.

No more 'Princess and the Pea' syndrome Granted, after hiking all day, it's not too hard to go to sleep. But having this pad under my bag makes it much more comfy. Since it doesn't matter how meticulous you are clearing the ground, not having to endure that one last pebble is great.
